Harvey John Smith was born in Ballandean, Queensland, and is the eldest son of Arthur John (Chub) Smith and Amy Mary Clara (Ruegg).

Harvey retired from M.I.M. Holdings Ltd at the end of 1998 after 30 years in senior Accounting, Administration, Audit and Risk Management roles. He currently consults in Risk Management, and Insurance.

When time allows, he is a keen Golfer, Clay Target shooter, fisherman, and 4WD driver.

Judy and Harvey have 3 children, and during their married life they have lived in Mount Isa, Townsville, Tieri and Brisbane. 

Harvey has a younger brother, Graham,  (married to Jenny Twist), who lives in Memphis, Tennessee, and a younger sister, Helen, who is married to Don Sanderson and lives in Brisbane.
